There has been a lot going on and a lot of it sad lately. Today was different.
Howe Sound has had an amazing recovery in the forty years I’ve been here. We went from almost no sea life to having seals, sea lions, orcas and all sorts of sea life return. Every sea animal feels precious to me now.
Today held the entire range of emotions as we tried to save an emaciated baby seal (first spotted by our niece, Andrea nine @days ago). That wee girl was nuzzling bouys and row boats seeking food and comfort.
I have spent two days going back and forth with Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue ( who have been amazing!) and today DFO gave them permission to rescue the wee girl!
Thanks to my friend Julia who told us what to look for!
Thanks to sister in law, Charlotte who kept tabs on the baby from the rowboat, brother in law John took a stellar video that surely convinced all involved she was in trouble and brother in law Rob performed an epic almost on the rocks boat adventure to save her as she swam up on the rocks. A family affair to be sure! If you are looking for a place to donate – I hope you can give a bit to the Aquarium rescue! If she can’t be with her mama, I’m so glad she is with the staff of Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue! Many thanks to Kelsey, Anna on the boat and rescuers and Kendra who organized the rescue!
