Story

Davis is an adult male California sea lion who was found weak and minimally responsive near a busy roadway. Emaciated and in distress, he was safely rescued and admitted to our facility for urgent care.

Patient Updates

Davis died on 2025/04/04 after 2 days in our care.

Sadly, during his exam we found a large mass in the area of his right sub lumbar lymph node. This mass in combination with his other symptoms, resulted in a very poor prognosis. His condition was not one he would have been able to recover from, and a decision was made to humanely euthanize him to prevent further suffering.California sea lions are prone to a particular cancer that often presents in a similar manner, and a necropsy will be conducted to confirm the diagnosis. We take comfort in knowing that Davis passed peacefully and that our veterinary team did everything they could for him.

Guestbook for Davis

  1. Sending Davis lots of positive thoughts and energy. Get better Davis, and go back to the ocean to live a long and happy sea lion life!

  2. We found Davis on our regular dog walk route in the early morning, at first he seemed just like a normal lethargic lazy sealion but when my dog barked at him and he didn’t show any response I knew something was wrong. We called MMR and Coastal Wildlife Rescue who were very quick to assist. I checked on him periodically through the day and was glad to see there was a volunteer there keeping watch of him until his rescue was made. I hope he starts to improve soon and I am just thankful there was someone to call who could help!

  3. I just want to thank the Marine mammal rescue people, to come out and look after Davis. Very sorry to hear he had to be put down. But thankful he did not have to suffer anymore.
I also thank the person who found him and phoned the rescue centre.

  4. Sad to see he has passed but glad he was not alone when it happened.

  5. We saw Davis just before 10 am and spoke to the lady who was phoning to get help – I guess that was Christina above. Later we watched the rescue from our hotel room opposite and were so impressed with the care that was taken by the rescue crew. Sorry to hear that Davis died but at least you gave him a chance. Bless you all.
