This is a large pre-release pool that houses many patients. Animals that have already demonstrated that they can eat fish on their own are placed in a larger pool like this where they can learn how to compete for fish and socialize with other harbour seals.
Pre-Release Pool Cariboo has demonstrated that she is confident eating fish on her and that she can compete for food with other harbour seals. She has been moved to a larger pool where she can further test and improve her skills. She will move between pools as she progresses further and develops her skills until she reaches her release weight. It can take just a few weeks or several months before a patient is ready for release, depending on health status and treatment plan, weight gain and transport availability.
Cariboo has calmed down a lot since she was rescued. She used to be quite a "bitey" girl, but now she seems to have accepted the pleasures provided by the rescue centre (free food!), and she eats in a much more well-mannered way. Well, she's in a pool now... we guess that all goes overboard now that it's all a competition.
