We overlook the ocean in Nanaimo and have some rocky outcroppings that disappear at high tide but are often exposed. We saw this little pup on his own; he stayed around for two days without any evidence of its mom. We called the Island Wildlife Natural Care Centre on Salt Spring Island and they sent a volunteer. He – along with my son – made several rescue attempts, but the little guy eluded them each time they came close. After about 4-5 hours of this the volunteer departed, when we again saw the seal on a rock close to the shore. We called once more, the volunteer returned, and this time they were successful in catching him and the volunteer took the seal pup to the Care Centre on Salt Spring. We felt great – and even more so once we heard that he had finally started to eat and was doing well. I can’t say enough about the dedication of the people I dealt with and it is amazing and gratifying to have played a small part in giving Tasmania a chance at what will hopefully be a long life.
